A Sunday Afternoon in Humboldt Park

2023, 18x9x9inches, porcelain and underglaze

This piece was inspired by my great-grandparents and their immigration to the Humboldt Park area in the early 1900s from Ukraine, to escape religious and political persecution. I included buildings on Kedzie and California Avenues, the iconic Humboldt Park boathouse and swan boats, a section of native plant species, and buried objects that I feel represent the history of the area, such as a 16 inch softball, swim goggles, bicycle parts, my dad’s 1963 Leica camera, a fishing lure, jewelry sourced from historic photos, and more.
